Williams Lake students win local Legion National Youth Remembrance Contest

Participating students came from the Adventist Academy, Maranatha, Nesika and Sacred Heart

Williams Lake students are celebrating after winning in the local Legion National Youth Remembrance Contest. Schools nationwide participate by submitting art and literary work, honouring and remembering Canadian veterans.

Sandra Abbott from the Williams Lake Legion and head of the judging contest crew said four schools participated this year: Cariboo Adventist Academy, Maranatha Christian School, Nesika Elementary School and Sacred Heart Catholic School.

“Though we had fewer entries this year, four schools participated, the quality of the students’ work is amazing,” said Abbott.

There are multiple levels for students to compete at, beginning with the local legions. From there, winners compete at zones, which in the Cariboo is from Wells to Clinton. Then, they move forward to the provincial level and, finally, the national.

From Cariboo Adventist Academy, the intermediate colour poster contest winners were Greg Caruso, Claire Cail and Ashton Morgan, in first, second and third place, respectively.

The senior colour poster contest winners were Caeden Dueck in second place and Kimora Price in third place.

The senior poem contest winners were Kadesh Peasgood in first, Jasmin Schaer in second and Josiah Nichols in third.

From Maranatha Christian School, the intermediate poem contest winners were Sophie Thiessen in first, Tyson Ward in second and Brooklyn Edinger in third.

The junior poem contest winners were Heinrich Steyl in first and Sunet Engelbrecht in second. Tied for third were Madison Croswell and Sacred Heart student Andrea Ibarra.

From Nesika, the junior black and white poster contest winners were Olivia Zurak in first place, Mya Kuttnick in second and Luke Hoeft in third. For the junior colour poster category, first place went to Lily Anderson, second to Keerat Kaur and third to Luna Montieth.

Cash prizes and certificates will be given to the first, second and third-place winners, with a presentation taking place in January.
