Osoyoos Coyotes defeated the Williams Lake Mustangs 6-2 on Sept. 27 in Williams Lake.
Four unanswered goals by the Coyotes from Matthew Lowry (one), Spencer Fleck (one) on the power-play, Austin Cooper (one) and Austin Rampone (one) led the Coyotes to victory.
Hunter Arntsen made 36 saves, surrendering goals to Mustangs Jacob Schtaif and Dawson Thomas with their first goals of the season. Asher Lucas assisted on both Mustang goals. Logan Messer scored a short-handed goal for the Coyotes.
The Mustangs wore orange jerseys in honour of Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation for the game.
Williams Lake First Nation Chief Willie Sellars led a group for an opening ceremony, with a traditional welcome and drumming song, followed by the puck-drop by Isadore Kalalest, the son of the late Anna "Bear" Kalelest, a huge hockey fan, hockey volunteer and hockey mom who died earlier this year.
Kalelest was always front and centre at Orange Shirt Day events as well.
During one of the intermissions Sellars and others performed a dance in full regalia at centre ice where Mustangs players placed a carpet.
The Mustangs' next game will see the team face off in Chase against the Chase Heat on Sunday, Sept. 29.
