A cross-country running team from Williams Lake excelled at the BC Schools Provincials held at Jericho Beach in Vancouver on Saturday, Nov. 2.
The Williams Lake Secondary and Columneetza Secondary students all qualified to compete at provincials by their performances at a zones meet in Fort St. John. Nadia Wallin had placed first at zones and Ella Theissen had placed second.
Ella and Nadia, both in Grade 11, competed in the senior girls AAA division, which includes Grade 12 runners as well, from some of the largest schools in the province.
Ella finished 26 and Nadia finished 27 out of 180 runners.
Grade 12 student Kiera Dyer also ran in the senior division and had a strong performance, garnering 49th place.
Grade 8 students Anna Burkey, Molly Murphy and Katy Jasper competed in the junior girls' division, racing against girls in Grade 8, 9 and 10, and a total of 266 runners.
Anna placed 118th, Molly got 121st and Katy placed 185th.
Parent Matt Burkey said they wanted to send a special thanks to coaches Chloe Menard and John Sheppard as well as the parents who supported the team throughout the season.
"With the cross-country season behind them, many of the team members are now looking forward to track and field season in the spring, and hoping to build on their success," Burkey said.
