Williams Lake mountain bikers head to Powell River for provincials

High school mountain bike racers are racing the trails of Power River for the high school provincials

High school mountain bike teams from two Williams Lake high schools are on the Sunshine Coast readying for competition.

The BC School Sports High School Provincial MTB Championships will take place in Powell River on May 22 and 23.

Fourteen students from both Lake City Secondary School and Columneetza Secondary School were embarking on the competitive adventure.

Each rider will complete an enduro race and a cross country race on their bike.

During an enduro event, riders are required to complete both uphill and downhill stages for a race, but only the downhill stages are timed. So while enduro mountain biking utilizes both uphill and downhill riding skills, only the downhill portion is timed for the competition.

Cross country mountain bike races are continuous races over a distance, timed to include the entire route. According to the Trailforks listing of the all mountain cross-country route, the planned race route will include a seven kilometre loop which combines parts of six trails and climbs 100 m and descends 118 m. Staging will be at Brooks Secondary School, which is hosting the provincials.

Pre-rides were taking place on Wednesday, May 21 and enduro races were scheduled to begin on May 22 at 8:30 a.m., ending at 4:30 p.m. followed by a BBQ social and then a film event.

On May 23, racers were to prepare and be ready to depart for on cross-country course at 8:30 a.m. and had until 1 p.m. to finish the course.

Awards were set for 2 p.m. on May 23.
