Xeni Gwet’in 15th Annual Youth Wagon Trip another great success

The group travelled from Nemiah Valley Lodge to get to the Williams Lake Stampede

Xeni Gwet’in 15th Annual Youth Wagon Trip arrived in Williams Lake Friday, June 30 just in time to be part of the grand entry at the 95th annual Williams Lake Stampede.

The group left from the Nemiah Valley Lodge eight days earlier on Friday, June 23 travelling from Nemiah Valley and up the 900 Taseko Road, over to Big Creek Road (2000 Road) and onto Highway 20.

As the group climbed the last hill on Highway 20 before the brake check, they said they had a great trip with perfect weather.

The group was all smiles once again as crowds lined Highway 20 in Williams Lake to cheer them on after their long journey.

Wagon masters were Roy and Gwen Mulvahill, joined by Tom Jennings and Jimmy Lulua. This year there were five wagons as well as outriders.

Xeni Gwet’in First Nation former chief Jimmy Lulua started the Xeni Gwet’in Youth Wagon Trip as a way to reconnect the community’s youth with horses and also revive a tradition of Indigenous people making their way to town for the Stampede many years ago.

The group participated in the grand entry as well as the Stampede Parade.
