The city council voted unanimously in support of the request, which came from the city's Accessibility Advisory Committee (AAC).

The AAC holds public meetings monthly eight to 10 times per year at city hall and is supported administratively by the city.

The committee's mission statement is: To remove barriers which impede the full participation of persons in all aspects of community life.

The AAC also gives out awards of merit to recognize improvements in accessibility in the community.
