Winter Go By Bike Week a first for Williams Lake

A low snow, warm February means an opportunity to swap skis for bikes this year

Williams Lake will be hosting their first every Winter Go By Bike Week events this week.

With record-breaking temperatures and not a lot of snow in the Cariboo, Go By Bike Williams Lake and Streets for All Williams Lake are asking residents, if you can’t ski, why not bike?

Denise Deschene, of Streets for All Williams Lake, is helping to promote Winter Go By Bike Week and was out on her bike today in downtown Williams Lake.

“I was a little surprised when I woke up and found the snow, but undeterred, I cam out anyway and it’s been fine,” she said.

Her advice for other riders is to stay off of ice, use wider tires and dress for the weather.

When asked whether she enjoyed it, Deschene said she did.

“No matter how hard it is to get on the bike I’ve never regretted it,” she said.

Biking in the winter can be a great way to stay in shape and live an active and sustainable lifestyle.

Winter Go By Bike Week has been a provincial event for many years, promoted mostly throughout the Lower Mainland, where winter riding usually means rain, not snow. But this year is lending itself to winter riding in the Interior of the province as well.

The week runs Feb. 5 through Feb. 11 and invites folks to use active transportation to replace a vehicle trip or to get outside and log a walk, ride or roll for a chance to win some big provincial prizes. Those prizes include a fat-tired e-bike or a cycling trip in Sicily.

Streets for All Williams Lake is hosting a Winter Go By Bike social and Spring Go By Bike planning event on Wednesday, Feb. 7 at 5:15 p.m. at C.J.’s Southwestern Grill.

Attendees will have a chance to sign up and get some information on Winter Go By Bike Week as well as get a hand logging their trips.

There will be food and information and planning for events for Spring Go By Bike Week as well.

Friday, Feb. 9 is International Winter Bike To Work Day and team leaders could win a $250 Visa gift card for getting folks involved.
