Williams Lake First Nation is hosting a sobriety celebration Friday, Jan. 26 with a feast and live music.

A chance to celebrate and honour individual people’s sobriety journeys, the event is open to everyone, said Kyleen Toyne, social development coordinator for WLFN.

“We want to gather to celebrate good things,” she said. “Tonight we will have a feast and we have a band - Cole Patenaude and the Screech Owls - and then anybody who wants to be recognized for their clean time we have Narcotics Anonymous and Alcohol Anonymous chips to recognize them.”

This is the first annual sobriety dance, however, sometimes at Sugarcane there are welcoming home celebrations for people returning from treatment.

“I get really excited about these events,” Toyne said. “I think it’s such a neat way for people to come together and celebrate. It’s important.”

The event begins at 5:30 p.m. and goes until 9:30 p.m. in the Elizabeth Grouse Gymnasium.

Additionally, one of the WLFN staff members will be sharing her personal story of sobriety.

“Depending on time, we will also have an open mic for anyone else wanting to share their story or make comments.”

There will also be ample door prizes.

Anyone who is celebrating clean time is encouraged to let Toyne know at 250-296-3507 ext. 186 or kyleen.toyne@wlfn.ca.
