The Williams Lake Farmers’ Market swung into high gear Friday, with bright skies and friendly faces.
After kicking off the Early Bird Market with Sedy Saturday last weekend, the Williams Lake Farmers Market was back in the Kiwanis Park parking lot for its first official opening of the season. Vendors of all sorts came out offering baked goods, art, plants and the first produce of the season to onlookers.
Market Manager Jane Bowser, who was running around making sure things ran smoothly, was happy to see the turnout on Friday. As last year’s market season was often either dominated by smoke or rain, it was nice to have a sunshine filled day to kick off the roughly 20 markets that will be happening between now and October 11 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Friday.
“It’s just a good place to come and we’re just starting the season but I know that later on, we’ll have a bunch of veggie vendors,” Bowser said.

For her, the best part about organizing the farmer’s market is the sense of community and the ability for local grassroots businesses to sell directly to the community. Maintaining an agricultural heritage and the City’s connection to farms is important, in Bowser’s eyes, as is keeping farmers fed.
Bowser said that the Tuesday evening markets are still in the works but that the Williams Lake Farmers Market Association is preparing to introduce them sometime in July of this season. She advises that people keep an eye on the farmers market’s Facebook page for more information.
