The annual Walk for Harmony in Williams Lake will take place in the lakecity on March 29 to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Racism.

“Embracing diversity and promoting racial harmony creates healthier, safer and more prosperous communities for all British Columbians,” says event organizer Eva Navrot.

She says this is the fifth Walk for Harmony in Williams Lake. The first one in the lakecity was held in 2006.

The United Nations declared March 21 International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination in 1996. It was designated in memory of peaceful demonstrators killed on March 21, 1960 in Sharpeville, South Africa.

She says Canada was one of the first countries to support the initiative and every year Canadians work locally, nationally and regionally to demonstrate their commitment to the elimination of racial discrimination and to raise awareness of the harmful effects of racism on society.

The Williams Lake Walk for Harmony starts at Boitanio Park at 11:45 a.m.  March 29 with a walk through the city ending at the Gibraltar Room for refreshments.
