Thompson Rivers University (TRU), Williams Lake campus, is working on a campus needs assessment for the region.
Aimed at identifying gaps and opportunities for ways the university could better support the region, including the regional centres in 100 Mile House and Lillooet, the assessment invites input from the area. Specifically, the assessment is asking what does TRU do really well, what could they improve and what could they do in terms of additional programs or services.
Cathy Carson of CCAR Consulting is conducting the assessment, and Carson is from Williams Lake originally. While she no longer resides in the lakecity, she is familiar with the culture and economy of the area.
She said the feedback she has been getting so far is very rich and after almost 50 years in the community, the university has touched nearly every household in the community.
“We’re really looking at revitalizing the campus, really enhancing the community and really respecting who that community is,” she said, noting since the pandemic, we teach and learn in different ways now and we have to adapt to those changes.
She invites anyone interested in continuing studies, potential employers looking for personnel, parents with potential students or young people interested in post-secondary or additional training and education to come by an in-person event at the Williams Lake campus.
TRU campus in Williams Lake is hosting a consultation event Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2024 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. in room 1251.
Carson will also be going to the high school this week to visit a career centre, classrooms and set up a booth over lunchtime.
The regional campus in 100 Mile House had been closed, but is reopening on April 1, 2024 and Carson said while there won’t be an opportunity to do a community consultation in 100 Mile House because the deadline for this particular consultation is March 5, 2024.
Those who can’t make the Williams Lake event in person can email feedback on TRU Williams Lake to her at cathy@ccarsolutions.com.
She said recommendations and the final report will be communicated out to the community after it is finalized on March 31.
