Students in the Lake City Secondary School (LCSS) Guitar Program were able to showcase their skills at the Talent Showcase held as a fundraiser Jan. 23.

The stage was set, lights were strung, professional sound was provided by Brandon Hoffman, and instructor Dena Baumann was the MC for her students, which she celebrated throughout the event.

For some it was their first performance in front of a live audience, and it was an encouraging crowd, with fellow students cheering one another on.

There was even a tasty concession of treats for just two dollars to help support the youth, some donated by Mint & Lime Catering.

All proceeds from the showcase were going to support the Guitar Program, from purchasing strings to hiring professional musicians to provide workshops for the students.

For example, the students were able to work with musician Saltwater Hank as part of a unit focussed on highlighting Indigenous songwriters. Hank is a member of the Gitga’at community and learned his community’s language later in life and now sings and writes songs in the Indigenous language Sm’algyax.

The Guitar Program plans to host another fundraiser showcase event in April.
