A local resident is continuing her yearly efforts to raise funds for the BC SPCA.

Long-time supporter of the Williams Lake BC SPCA, Gerda Knuff, has showcased her dedication, care and concern for animals over the years. She actively participates in the organization’s fundraising events, frequently engaging in the silent auctions by bidding on various items.

Knuff has loved animals ever since she was a little girl and loves living in Williams Lake, having spent her entire adult life in the community, raising two children with her husband.

She retired in 2018 after working as a Chartered Professional Accountant, and has had a hobby farm with horses, chicken and dogs since then. Recently, she has taken on a new role as Pampered Chef consultant, which affords her the opportunity to combine her love for animals with promoting her business.

“Pampered Chef has filled a bit of a void as far as connecting with folks and staying busy,” she said. “I love their quality products, too.”

Pampered Chef offers in-home or virtual fundraiser parties where 10 per cent of each order is donated to a non-profit.

She started the side gig last December and is enjoying the extra “play money,” as she calls it, and says being able to host fundraisers has been “very rewarding.”

So far, Knuff has fundraised for the Freedom’s Gate Equine Rescue in addition to the BC SPCA, and currently has four other active fundraisers for the On Our Way Home Animal Rescue, Senior Citizens Activity Centre, Cariboo Friendship Society, and Williams Lake Speed Skating Club.

The BC SPCA Williams Lake Facebook page posted about Knuff’s “outstanding efforts” and thanked her for generating essential funds.

“The tireless dedication she has shown in supporting our cause is truly commendable, and the animals under our care, who rely on those funds, extend their heartfelt gratitude,” the post read.

“Gerda’s contributions have made a significant impact, ensuring that we can continue to provide the care and support these animals need day and night.”

The Williams Lake BC SPCA says they are fortunate to receive incredible support from Knuff and others in the community.

“Regular visits from members of the public result in generous donations, ranging from much-needed items and bags of pet goodies to entire carloads of supplies for the animals in care,” said Williams Lake BC SPCA manager Elizabeth Dighton.

Dighton goes on to say that every contribution is valued and appreciated, whether it’s cleaning supplies or the occasional treat for volunteers.

“From small to large, be it in the form of items or monetary donations, each gift plays a crucial role in enabling the SPCA to provide the necessary care for these beloved pets,” she said.

Monetary donations play a pivotal role in supporting a diverse range of needs at the Williams Lake BC SPCA, such as essential expenses like heating and lighting to ensure animal comfort regardless of the weather. Funds also contribute to preventative veterinary medications, which are crucial for enhancing the overall health of the pets.

Monetary donations support the practice of spaying or neutering all pets before adoption as well, increasing efforts to reduce the number of unwanted litters and promoting responsible pet ownership, according to Dighton.

The Williams Lake BC SPCA extends their gratitude to Knuff and every individual, whether client or donor, and recognizes their valuable support. Dighton says that with the collective assistance, the SPCA remains a committed and steadfast advocate for animals.

“The organization is dedicated to upholding its mission, which is to protect and enhance the quality of life for domestic, farm and wild animals in British Columbia,” she said. “Support plays a crucial role in fulfilling this mission and making a positive impact on the well-being of animals.”
