The 20th Seniors Christmas Dinner hosted by HUB International on Second Avenue South was a success, with 200 guests enjoying a sit-down meal together.
The sold-out event was at Sacred Heart in the hall from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m., with dinner served promptly at 5:30 p.m. Wendell Blois attended with his wife Kelly, mother-in-law Joyce Scarff, and her friends, and said the dinner was so organized and efficient, everyone was served within 11 minutes.
“The food was fantastic, the service was phenomenal, and everyone was so friendly,” said Wendell.
Roger Gysel from HUB was the head chef, making scalloped potatoes, ham, mixed veggies and coleslaw, along with the help of 16 HUB staff. For dessert, guests were treated to cake. BC Ambulance Service, BC Sheriff Services and the RCMP served the food.
Guests were treated to music by Les Anderson, who sang Christmas carols. He’s been singing for the event every year for the past 10 or so years, he said. MLA Lorne Doerkson was the emcee and Councillor Scott Nelson came as Santa Claus.
Gysel said the event was excellent, and 200 guests were treated to a Christmas gift to take home.
The seniors dinner has happened yearly since 2000, other than a three-year hiatus during the pandemic. Past events were held at Elks Hall, making Sacred Heart’s hall the first for this dinner, which was decorated with Christmas lights, bows and wreaths.
HUB International hosts the annual dinner as a way to give back to the community, while guests this year brought donations for the food bank.
