Community celebrates Williams Lake's 96th

Guests enjoyed the opportunity to visit and see firsthand what's been happening at the museum

A 96th birthday tea marking Williams Lake's date of incorporation as a village attracted a full house Friday, March 14 at the Museum of the Cariboo Chilcotin.

Although the actual date of incorporation was March 15, 1929, organizers felt it would be easier to hold the event on a week day.

Acting Mayor Michael Moses said he was proud and honoured to represent the city.

"I would love to thank the museum for hosting us today," he said. "I'm accompanied here today by Coun. Scott Nelson and we are so pleased to witness more of Williams Lake's wonderful history."

As he looked around the museum Friday, Moses said he saw a photograph of his grandfather, Dave Perry, who in 2006 was nominated into the BC Cowboy Hall of Fame.

"It was pretty exciting for our family," Moses said.

He also thanked the museum for pieces of the official Williams Lake tartan that were gifted to special guests and attached to name tags.

"I'd only seen pictures of it before so having a piece of it is pretty nice."

Volunteer Lorraine Jasper has been collecting histories of the areas elders and pioneers and keeps having more names added to her list.

"Our pioneers and older generations have so many valuable lessons that the younger generations could learn from them," Jasper said.

Guests at the party had the opportunity to view the interviews that have been completed so far through a video slideshow on display in the cowboy display area.

A large birthday cake with the city's logo displayed in the centre and some cupcakes sporting the city's colours were served as well as tea and coffee.

Melissa Newberry, who writes grant applications for the museum, made the cupcakes.

The museum has also been digitizing some of its Efteen collection, focusing on the 1950s. Two of the volunteers helping with that project are Navneet Singh and Tanvi Walia, both are newcomers to the city.
