Williams Lake Stampede Grounds were bustling Saturday morning, April 6 as youth participated in a judging event.

“It’s a district requirement that we attend two,” said Shelby Hollett, 17, who is a member of the Springhouse 4-H Club.

She said the judging events teach the youth what to look for by examining different aspects of 4-H, such as honey bee, something she normally does not pursue herself.

Springhouse 4-H club member Kellin Mann, nine, was attending his first-ever judging event while Wade Hansen, 13, said he likes doing the judging quite a bit.

For Horsefly 4-H club member Aleah Cartwright, 10, judging horses took her out of her comfort zone but she was up for the challenge.

“I’m more of a swine person,” she said as she made some notes on her clip board. Joining her at the site was Aaliyah Aldridge, 10, also a member of the Horsefly 4-H.

Taya Parkins, nine, was one of the Canim Valley 4-H members who travelled to Williams Lake for the event.

She was at a site manned by Karen Sepkowski where the participants were expected to rate the best seed potato from a choice of four samples.

Braydon Lazar, 11, also with Horsefly 4-H was judging the eggs station.

“From judging you can learn a lot,” he said, smiling. “I really like doing activities with 4-H.

Saturday, April 6, was Jocelynn Johnson’s 14th birthday and she seemed happy to spending part of the day at the judging event.

A member of the Rose Lake and Miocene 4-H, Jocelynn said the judging events are part of the experiences and memories she enjoys.

“I like working with animals and helping the younger children here,” she said.

Katie French, 16, also a member of the Rose Lake Miocene 4-H, said the likes raising animals and loves showing them.

“It is a good experience to have,” she said. “It teaches you a lot.”

This year the Third Annual Cariboo Classic Junior Steer and Heifer Show takes place May 31 to June 2 at the BC Livestock Co-op in Williams Lake.

Entry deadline is April 20 with online entry forms available through caribooclassic@gmail.com.

There will also be a 4-H Family Frenzy on Saturday, April 27 at Williams Lake TRU Campus, 1250 Western Avenue.

The frenzy is an opportunity for people to learn more about 4-H.
