I know I’m not alone in feeling like wildfire season starts earlier with each passing year. We’re only approaching mid-June and already the current season is setting records. It is more important than ever to remain vigilant and be fire smart.

Congratulations to the 226 young people who graduated from Williams Lake Senior Secondary school in Williams last weekend. I didn’t go to the ceremony, but I did see the parade and it was a good one. From all accounts I heard the ceremony was also a good one. No horses in the parade this year but a goodly number of paraders had bubble guns and the bubbles wafting around the floats was a nice touch. AND it didn’t rain on the parade.

Our behaviour, which is a real reflection of culture, needs to be founded in doing the right thing

After noticing two large tree planting camps along Highway 20 during my last trip out west it got me thinking about my time as the silviculture audit forester. With all the forest fires and the unprecedented warm weather I have some sympathy for the planting crews as well as the seedlings trying to survive in a year like this.

We know that housing affordability is one of the most difficult challenges facing our province right now. It’s most often discussed in the context of Metro Vancouver where prices have hit astronomical highs in the last few years. While it’s true that our province’s urban centres have seen some of the largest price increases, it’s important to realize that affordability is not just a big city issue.

While we may be still below the record fire year for Canada (4.1 million hectares in 2021) the scary part is how we are above the average of 2.5 million (close to the second highest 2.9 in 2017) hectares but this is early June which leaves lots of time to surpass the record.
