Born in Salmon Arm, Lazar played his youth hockey with the Vernon Minor Hockey Association before moving to Penticton for prep play.

In the NHL, Lazar has played 11 seasons, starting in Ottawa, then moving to Calgary, Buffalo, Boston, Vancouver and New Jersey. His high-water mark season was in 2023-24 with the Devils, potting seven goals and 18 assists for 25 points in 71 games.
