Living in the Cariboo, they are a part of our natural landscape, they contribute to our local economy, and they provide numerous recreation opportunities. I am talking about, of course — our forests. I wanted to take the opportunity to recognize National Forest Week because of the many contributions forests make to the Cariboo, and British Columbia.

Premier Christy Clark's " to B.C. Jobs Plan" took some hits as she was finishing her week-long publicity tour to roll it out. But the serious damage wasn’t from her political opponents on the left and right.

Editor: The ongoing teacher job action is having an effect on many people in the education system.

“Healthy lifestyles” — we hear the phrase quite often these days and it seems to be used to refer to many different things. The World Health Organization defines healthy lifestyle as a way of living that lowers the risk of becoming seriously ill or dying early. Health is not just about avoiding disease; it’s about physical, mental and social well being and being a positive role model. Who are you a role model for? A young child? A classroom full of students? Your relatives? Your family?

William Gladstone has been quoted as saying, “Show me the manner in which a nation or community cares for its dead and I will measure with mathematical exactness the tender mercies of its people, their respect for the law of the land and their loyalty to high ideals.”

On the very worst nights the bag’s odour permeates even my dreams.

People say a lot of things about the Cariboo Memorial Hospital and our over-taxed medical system and the competence of the staff that delivers our beloved “universal” medical care … so that’s what I’m gonna do too.
