Thank you, Apple Pie Society, for giving me your award. It certainly was a surprise, a very nice one, and I really appreciate your deciding that I deserved it. The pie was delicious and was thoroughly enjoyed by those who shared it with me.

Speaking of awards, congratulations to Dave Dickson, the city’s director of emergency support services, on his receiving the Canadian Emergency Management Exemplary Service Award (EMESA) for “Outstanding Contribution to Emergency Management.” This prestigious award was presented to him on February 26 by the Hon. Harjit S. Sajjan, Minister of Emergency Preparedness, and Sherry Romanado, Parliamentary Secretary. It is recognition for individuals and groups from across Canada for their exceptional service in emergency management -- rescue operations, public safety initiatives, and training programs that enhance emergency preparedness.

I’m  sorry the documentary Sugarcane didn’t get the Oscar. It should have.

U.S. President Donald Trump’s disgusting treatment of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy dominated the world news last week. The two met at a televised meeting in the Oval Office to sign a deal on the U.S.’s continuing support for the Ukraine in its conflict with Russia in return for the United States acquiring some Ukrainian minerals. The meeting turned into a shouting match with Trump doing most of the shouting and behaving like a bullying buffoon. He made numerous false accusations against Zelenskyy, who left the meeting, deal unsigned.

Zelenskyy is considered by many to be a hero for keeping the Russian aggressors at bay for three years.  European leaders met with him the day after the Trump fiasco and pledged their support in seeking a cease fire agreement between Russia and the Ukraine. Later, Zelenskyy had a friendly audience with King Charles.

As I write this, I’m holding my breath waiting for President Trump’s tariff news, whatever it might be.
