Queens of the big ice were crowned recently, as the Williams Lake women's five-on-five hockey league playoffs wrapped up.
Team Green, a.k.a. Cash Money, took home the trophy, after the inaugural season of the Williams Lake Women's Hockey League.
"It was really good," said Shannon Thom, one of the league organizers. Thom said the league was meant to give women in the community a place to play five-on-five hockey, which had previously not been a formalized option with league ice times.
The first season saw them fill four teams, with the three other teams being Team Red / The Heat, Team Yellow / The Golden Girls, and Team Blue / Blue Lightning.
With about 70 players registered in the league, the four teams had 12-13 players per team, with a few spares to fill in when players were away.
"We had a really good turnout," said Thom.
She said the league also had three great referees, including one young female ref being mentored into the role.
Thom said the league is welcoming to all skill levels, with some players never having stepped on the ice in gear before to women who came up through rep hockey.
"We've got a huge age range," she said as well.
Tom said the league organizers are very grateful to the sponsors who made the league possible, supporting everything from pucks to jerseys to the incredible league trophy.
Anyone interested in sponsoring next season or becoming involved as a ref or otherwise, can contact the league at: williamslakewomenshockeyleague@gmail.com.
Registration for players for next season will open in the fall of 2025.
An awards banquet is being held March 7 for the league as well.
