Well, Canada won the World Hockey Game against the U.S.
It’s only right for us to win international hockey games, hockey is our sport, but this game was special. Our once-friendly neighbour, the United States, has turned against us. President Trump’s constant yapping about making us His 51st state, threatening fearful tariffs and being a bully has made Canadians anxious.
We needed this win as symbol of our country’s strength, along with cheering us up. Changing the words of O Canada from ‘All of us command’ to ‘Only us command’ wasn‘t a bad idea either as a message to Mr. Trump.
This need to win put more pressure than usual on our guys on the ice who had to make it happen. It was a nail-biter game, but they did it, making our whole country feel like winners. Congratulations to our Canadian team, and thank you for being the heroes who won the first battle.
Seeing professional hockey players embrace each other after a good play or goal says something about the special bond between team members, sports or otherwise.
Sometimes the members of minor hockey teams don’t get to know each other very well as they only meet at practices or games. A local minor hockey team (mixed boys and girls) participated in a weekend tournament in Prince George recently. The boys (like the pros) hugged each other after goals and good plays. On the first day of the tournament, the girls didn’t do any hugging.
After the players spent the time together between games over the weekend, they got to know each other, and in the later games, the girls joined in the hugs.
There is a message there. Getting to know each other usually leads to liking/respecting each other. It works everywhere, not just for hockey games.
