The game of stick curling is on solid ice at the Williams Lake Curling Club.
The modified game in the sport of curling provides a more accessible option for people with reduced mobility who cannot crouch down on the ice into the traditional curling hack. The “hack” is a block which normally, a curler would use to push off from to throw a curling rock. Pushing off of the hack requires getting into a low lunge position, which can be hard if a person struggles with knee, lower back or other problems.
Stick curling is a modified game, which gives curlers the ability to push the rock from a standing position using a stick which attaches the handle of the curling rock.
Other modifications in the game include only requiring two players per team instead of the usual four, with each player throwing six rocks per end. Players must not cross centre ice, so each teammate alternates as skip, directing their teammate where to place their rocks.
At the Williams Lake Curling Club, stick curling takes place on Mondays at 11 a.m. and Thursdays at 1 p.m., and players should arrive 30 minutes before in order to be able to start play on time.
The league is open to any adult interested in trying, with no skill requirement and the first game is free.
Players can play for two games back to back on each of the two days, if they want.
