Elementary school students are getting a morning of play time at the park this week.

The City of Nanaimo and Nanaimo-Ladysmith Public Schools are co-hosting Healthamongus this week, May 12-16, at Harewood Centennial Park.

Students spend their mornings at the two artificial turf fields, rotating between eight different stations to take part in non-competitive activities such as tag, beach ball volleyball, soccer, obstacle courses and more. The activities were designed to introduce or reinforce fundamental movement skills such as running, jumping, balance, agility, kicking, throwing and dribbling, according to a city press release.

Healthamongus has been going on for 18 years and this year it was expected to engage 3,300 students from kindergarten to Grade 5.

"Healthamongus is a great way to get kids active and introduce the concept that exercise can be spontaneous, fun and playful," said Damon Johnston, the city's manager of recreation services, in the release.
