The Columneetza Grade 9 boys' and girls' basketball teams have earned the honour of representing the North Central zone at the upcoming provincial championships. The boys' team will head to Abbotsford, while the girls' team will travel to New Westminster for their respective tournaments at the end of February. This achievement is a testament to the dedication, hard work, and perseverance of both teams throughout the season.
Columneetza girls make history
For the first time in Columneetza history, a Grade 9 girls' team from the North Central zone will compete in the provincial championships. The Columneetza Falcons are thrilled for the opportunity to showcase their skills at the provincial level, competing against some of the best teams in the province.
Coach Kaylee Billyboy expressed her pride in the team’s achievements and the commitment they have shown throughout the season.
"I am beyond impressed and proud of the growth I have seen in these girls on the court and off the court this season," she said.
The team has worked tirelessly to develop their skills, refine their strategies, and build strong chemistry. Now, as they prepare for the provincial tournament from February 26 to March 1 at New Westminster Secondary School, they are focused on fine-tuning their game and preparing mentally for the challenge ahead. The team understands that the competition will be fierce, but they are eager to take on the challenge and prove themselves.
The tournament will kick off with a banquet on February 26, featuring a “Good Ole Country” theme. Coach Billyboy shared a lighthearted moment from the team, saying, "Some of the girls suggested that we can just go as ourselves, being as we come from Williams Lake."
The team is embracing the experience and looking forward to representing their community with pride.
Columneetza boys earn back-to-back provincial berth
The Columneetza Grade 9 boys' team continued their winning tradition by securing the North Central zone title for the second consecutive year. Competing on their home court in Williams Lake on February 14, the Falcons battled through two tough matchups to emerge victorious.
In the final game, they defeated the Sir Alexander Mackenzie Secondary Grizzlies from Bella Coola by seven points to punch their ticket to provincials. The victory was a hard-fought battle, with every player contributing to the success of the team.
Tanner Loring played a crucial role in the championship win, displaying tenacious defence and sinking four three-pointers in the final game. His efforts helped propel the Falcons past the Grizzlies and secured their place among the top teams in the province. His ability to rise to the occasion and deliver in crucial moments was a key factor in the team's success.
Coach Mike Waterhouse praised the team’s effort and determination, highlighting their resilience in the face of tough competition.
"This team has shown incredible heart and determination throughout the season," he said. "They have worked extremely hard to get to this point, and I know they will give everything they have at provincials."
The boys will now set their sights on the provincial championships in Abbotsford, where they aim to represent Columneetza and the North Central zone with pride. They understand the level of competition they will face, but they are prepared to rise to the occasion.
A bright future for Williams Lake basketball

It is a testament to the strength of the basketball program, the dedication of the coaches, and the hard work of the student-athletes. This achievement not only highlights the talent of the current teams but also sets the foundation for future teams to follow in their footsteps.
