Williams Lake city council smoothed the way for an access to Glen Arbor's new section, by approving a new variance permit at their regular meeting on June 24, 2025.
Council voted unanimously to allow for a reduction in the inside radius of the driveway access after an application for Cariboo Park Home Society to adjust driveway access to the complex at 564 Oliver Street.
A variance permit allows property owners and developers to deviate from city rules and regulations in some instances when approved by the city.
The variance approves reducing the required minimum radius on all curves and corners of driveway access roads by half.
The goal of the change in design was to reduce the cost of the second phase of the seniors housing complex which includes a five-story, 36-unit addition to the existing property.
However, staff initially had concerns the reduced turning radius in the driveway could be an issue for garbage trucks or fire trucks.
But modelling of the plan was submitted and after the plans were examined by public works staff and emergency services, staff said they have confidence the variance will not be an issue.
The 36-unit addition to the affordable housing complex is valued at $12.5 million.
"It's nothing but a win-win," said Mayor Surinderpal Rathor of the Glen Arbor addition.
Council voted unanimously in favour of the variance.
