City council will be discussing the city's options in addressing threats to public safety after a memorandum brought forward by Coun. Scott Nelson.

"We are looking at what options are available to the city," said Mayor Surinderpal Rathor, noting a lot of questions would have to be discussed before a city-wide curfew could be implemented.

The memorandum from Nelson, prepared for the Tuesday, May 27 regular council meeting, makes statements about the increased threat to public safety in the community, calling the situation an "escalating assault on our community."

He states Interior Health should be responsible for transporting individuals "determined to require involuntary care to a suitable facility without delay."

The memorandum puts forward the recommendation for city staff to look at options for declaring a State of Local Emergency, establishing a curfew from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. in collaboration with the RCMP and others, and for individuals displaying public intoxication or severe mental issues to be transported to the hospital for review of involuntary treatment.
