BC Wildfire Service and the Cariboo Regional District, with support from Williams Lake First Nation will be doing some burning near Highway 97 in Williams Lake.
A prescribed burn near White Road, Bellevue Drive and Highway 97 is planned to take place April 5 and 6.
The burning is aimed at reducing wildfire risk in the area and will cover approximately six hectares near the Welcome to Williams Lake rest area south of Williams Lake on the north side of Highway 97.
Ignition will take place if weather conditions and atmospheric venting are favourable and will allow smoke to clear quickly.
Fire and smoke will be visible from Highway 97, Williams Lake First Nation, and Coyote Rock and nearby subdivisions.
Crews will ignite ground fuels and this may result in the candling of some trees, which is expected.
Traffic control will also be in place to help ensure the safety of the public and firefighters as they work. Highway travellers can expect some minor delays.
Smoke may be visible in the area for up to 72 hours after the initial burn.
BC Wildfire Service said the goals of the prescribed burn are to help reduce wildfire risk around the city of Williams Lake and outlying areas as well as to restore forest health and a properly functioning ecosystem.
