Two small wildfires sparked out of control north and south of Revelstoke during the middle of Wednesday, June 18, BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) reports.

The first was a burn a couple kilometres west of Shelter Bay on Highway 23, reported by BCWS by noon Wednesday. That's about 52 kilometres south of Revelstoke, along the way to Nakusp.

Lightning, responsible for roughly 70 per cent of B.C. wildfires based on provincial data from recent years, is the suspected cause.

The second fire was a burn identified by BCWS by 1:30 p.m. Wednesday along the west side of Revelstoke's Jordan River, about 15 kilometres north of the city.

BCWS hadn't shared a suspected cause of this second wildfire by 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Both fires fall in the northwestern end of the Southeast Fire Centre, and reportedly remain smaller than a tennis court at 0.009 hectares each.
