The District of Saanich is taking action to make its roads safer.
The district approved a Road Safety Action Plan on Oct. 21 that outlines steps it will take to achieve Vision Zero – targets it adopted in 2022 to eliminate traffic fatalities and severe injuries.
"The plan ... considers the needs of all road users to further safety for people who walk, ride a bike, take a bus, use a mobility device or drive in Saanich," said the district in a news release. "It provides direction for safer road design, appropriate speeds, enforcement, education, awareness and advocacy to higher levels of government to support safe vehicle standards."
The district predicts that implementing the plan will require a $21 million investment over the next decade, which includes $13.5 million dedicated to new capital projects and $2.5 million for non-infrastructure initiatives.
These include enhancing emergency response and post-crash processes, promoting responsible behaviour among all road users through education and enforcement and implementing infrastructure that minimizes conflict and risk.
