Plans for new municipal facilities in Central Saanich will make the current municipal hall a beehive of activity on Sunday.

Central Saanich residents can get a look at the proposed designs for new municipal facilities, including a police station, fire hall and municipal offices, at a Sunday (June 22) open house at municipal hall, 1903 Mount Newton Cross Rd.

But a group of irate residents upset with the plans for a project expected to cost $45-50 million will be staging a rally outside the hall to protest the impact the cost will have on the community of 17,000 people.

"The rally will be an opportunity to display public concern and opposition to the current plans to sell to private developers all or half of the current site at 1903 Mt Newton Cross Rd. and to move civic facilities to a smaller expropriated property, currently a hayfield on Hovey Road," according to a release from the citizens group also upset with the lack of public input.

The open house is set for 2-4 p.m., while the rally will take place at 3 p.m.

Central Saanich contends the plan provides good value as the project will modernize emergency services and civic facilities, thanks to the potential sale of land, anticipated to be valued at over $20 million.

Residents will likely have the opportunity to vote on whether the district should borrow $33.5 million to finance the project through an alternative approval process or referendum this fall.
