The owner of a stolen dinghy will be reunited with their $16,000 vessel, thanks to the Oak Bay Police Department.

On the morning of May 1, Oak Bay police received a report of the theft of a dinghy and motor. The following day, officers, with assistance from the RCMP, located the boat beached at McNeill Bay in Oak Bay.

“No one was nearby, and it appeared to be abandoned,” the department said in a news release.

Officers freed the dinghy and used rope to attach it to an RCMP police boat. Police then towed the dinghy to a new location for its rightful owner to collect.

This was just one of 72 calls for service Oak Bay PD responded to between April 28 and May 4, including another that resulted in an immediate roadside prohibition.

Shortly after 11 p.m. on May 3, a motorcycle crashed in the 200-block of King George Terrace. The 37-year-old rider lost control and slid onto the sidewalk and then into a bush.

“A witness called police after seeing him lying on the ground with beer cans nearby,” Oak Bay Police Department said in a release. “Police administered a roadside breathalyzer, which resulted in a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition.”

The motorcycle was towed, and the male was released at the scene. He suffered minor injuries but declined medical attention. No one else was injured and there was no other property damage.

In a separate incident, police impounded a vehicle after it was observed going 100 km/h in a 40 km/h zone April 30 on the 800-block of Beach Drive. The driver received a ticket for excessive speed and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.
