There will be a parade in Williams Lake for National Indigenous Day on Saturday, June 21.

A five-hour celebration is planned for National Indigenous Peoples Day in Williams Lake.

Williams Lake First Nation, The Tsq’escenemc and Stswecem’c Xget’tem First Nation are collaborating for the event and invite everyone to attend.

At 11 a.m. the parade will depart from the Shuswap Tribal Council office at the corner of First Avenue and Oliver Street.

From there the parade will wind its way up Oliver Street down to Seventh Avenue up to Boitanio Park, with the welcoming ceremony at 12 p.m. at the main stage.

There will be children's booths and vendors in the park, ball hockey at noon, and the Chilcotin Dreams Band performing at 1 p.m.

To register for the parade, book a booth or vendor spot, please contact Bonnie Pinchbeck at Bonnie_Pinchbeck@WLFN.CA.

In 1996, Governor General Roméo LeBlanc declared June 21 of each year as "National Aboriginal Day." This was the result of consultations and statements of support for such a day made by various Indigenous groups.

On June 21, 2017, the Prime Minister issued a statement announcing the intention to rename this day "National Indigenous Peoples Day."
