Two men accused in connection with a fatal stabbing in May 2022 in Williams Lake are scheduled for their next court appearance in February 2025.

Michael Bauer and Garrett Shirey were arrested and charged with manslaughter on May 3, 2024, in the death of 19-year-old Richard 'Richie' Todd.

Their court appearance will be through Surrey Provincial Court in front of an out-of-town judge for a virtual pre-trial conference, confirmed the BC Prosecution Service, but noted the trial will be held in Williams Lake.

A publication ban remains in place under section 517 (1) which bans the publication of any information shared during a bail hearing, as well as the reasons given by the judge, until the accused is discharged or, if ordered to stand trial, the trial has ended.

On May 5, 2022, around 11 p.m., Williams Lake RCMP responded to the stabbing.

Todd was critically injured and died in hospital.

In the days that followed, friends and family of the young man gathered in the 300 block of Midnight Drive to hold a vigil for Todd, who was originally from Tl’etinqox First Nation.

Lenny Billy, Todd’s mom, told the Tribune at the time her son had just turned 19 in March and was “really kind-hearted, always happy and outgoing.”
