Two men charged with manslaughter in the death of Richie Todd, 19, in Williams Lake two years ago have been granted bail.
North District RCMP announced May 3, 2024 they had arrested Michael Bauer, 26, and Garrett Shirey, 25, and charged them both with manslaughter.
The charges stem from May 5, 2022, when the Williams Lake RCMP responded to the stabbing of 19-year old Richie Todd on Midnight Drive in Williams Lake at around 11 p.m.
Todd was critically injured and died in hospital.
Bauer and Shirey appeared in Williams Lake Provincial Court by video Wednesday, June 5 for their bail hearing, with newly-appointed provincial court judge Sabina Thompson presiding.
They were released with conditions and are scheduled to appear in court again on July 3, 2024 in Williams Lake.
There is a publication ban on any evidence and information presented during the bail hearing.
Todd was originally from Tl’etinqox First Nation.
At the time of his death, Tl’etinqox Chief Joe Alphonse confirmed the victim was the second person from his community to be murdered in Williams Lake in 2022.
“The aftermath of incidents like this are pretty traumatic for families and for young people to lose friends in that way. We encourage anyone who knows anything to come forward,” he said.
Alphonse said everyone wants to live in a community that is safe for all families.
“We cannot expect the RCMP or others to do that for us. Every one of us has an obligation and when something like this happens the people who are responsible need to be held accountable.”
