For National Drowning Prevention Week, from July 20 to 26, Strathcona Gardens Recreation Complex is holding a free event on July 21, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Hill Beach by McIvor Lake. There will be activities focused on teaching water-smart skills in, on, and around the water.

In 2024, Vancouver Island saw 23 drowning deaths, many of which were linked to not using life jackets, drinking alcohol, and not having proper supervision near water.

National Drowning Prevention Week, happening from July 20 to 26, serves as an important reminder that these tragedies can be prevented with the right knowledge and safety practices.

To help spread the word, the Strathcona Gardens Recreation Complex is holding a free event on July 21, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Hill Beach by McIvor Lake. There will be activities focused on teaching water-smart skills in, on, and around the water.

Lifeguards from Strathcona Gardens will be on duty throughout the day, with a variety of activities for children. Water safety information booths will also be set up, where participants can learn about lifejacket use, supervision tips, and local swimming programs. This event is designed to promote water safety and drowning prevention through fun, hands-on experiences for the whole community.

Free transportation will be available to and from McIvor Lake from Strathcona Gardens Recreation Complex and the Sportsplex, with two departure times during the day. Reserve a spot at strathconagardens.com/swimbus.

To stay safe on the water, residents are encouraged to complete the Lifesaving Society’s Swim to Survive Standard, which teaches essential skills to survive an unexpected fall into water, and consider joining a learn-to-swim program.

It's essential to always wear a well-fitted life jacket on the water and to avoid drinking alcohol while engaging in water activities. Ensure kids are directly supervised by an adult when near open bodies of water. Keep an eye on your kids, not your phone.

The Strathcona Gardens on Facebook and Instagram will share safety tips, resources, and water smart messages throughout National Drowning Prevention Week.
