Penticton City Hall. Voters will head to the polls for the second this year on Aug. 23, to elect a new city councillor.

The nomination period for Penticton's second by-election this year officially opened on July 8.

As of Tuesday at 4:30 p.m., two candidates — Jordan Shade and Wayne Llewellyn — have filed their nomination papers to enter a race that will see a new person elected to city council.

The by-election, set for Aug. 23, is being held to replace former city councillor Helena Konanz, current MP for Similkameen—South Okanagan—West Kootenay.

Shade is a local entrepreneur who has called Penticton home for the last 15 years.

Llewellyn, meanwhile, spent more than three decades working for the City of Calgary. He ran unsuccessfully for a Penticton council seat in the 2022 municipal election.

Nomination papers can be submitted until 4 p.m. on Friday, July 18.

The campaign period itself kicks off July 26, before an advanced voting phase on Aug. 13 and 14, at the Penticton Trade and Convention Centre.

This summer's by-election marks the second of its kind for Penticton since April.

Another municipal-wide vote was triggered after former councillor Amelia Boultbee vacated her seat in the wake of becoming MLA for Penticton-Summerland.

Jason Reyen won that by-election on April 5.

Nomination documents and packages can be found here.
