For more than 38 years, Martin Varma has been studying the ancient martial arts, and now he is bring his years of experience to Williams Lake.
Varma began to focus specifically on Wing Chun Kung Fu in 2005, a style of Kung Fu perhaps most famous as the one which Bruce Lee first studied to inspire his unique style of martial arts.
Wing Chun focuses on fluidity over strength, using your opponent's force against them.
Today, Varma is a sifu or teacher of Wing Chun Kung Fu, with classes based out of his home in Williams Lake, B.C.
Wing Chun is known as a martial art which aims to disable opponents quickly in close combat, which means Varma leads only small groups of students in a traditional, relaxed environment with a focus on "sticking hands," known as Chi Sau. A wooden dummy is also part of the Wing Chun system, used in more advanced forms of the martial art.
Varma said his approach is non-political, and students can learn at their own pace.
"My goal is to honour my sifu and my Kung Fu brothers and sisters by sharing this amazing art," said Varma.
