Re: 'Voters say 'no' to $30M loan' (PQB News, April 16)

In an article in your paper, Mayor Westbroek laments the Oceanside taxpayers' overwhelming rejection of the funding referendum for a new Ravensong pool project.

He attempts to cast the blame for the turndown on Nanoose Bay residents who have a longstanding aversion to paying for overpriced RDN capital projects they do not use.

However, non-Nanoose residents rejected the project by about a 15 per cent margin as well. This referendum should be a strong reminder to the RDN board and more importantly to their staff, that their endless list of expensive projects has a cost much more than their taxpayers can bear.

So if our elected representatives and their bureaucrats cannot distinguish between what is critical and what would be nice to have, then the taxpayers will have to do it for them.
