If any your readers are wondering why the Ravensong Aquatic referendum was soundly defeated with more than 60 per cent in opposition, may I offer some reasons:
Skepticism that the actual cost of this major retrofit would be anything close to the projected cost, given pool expansions in Victoria with dramatically higher capital costs.
Admission rates so low for users that they are less than the cost of popcorn at a movie theatre.
In Qualicum Beach and nearby Parksville, turnout was modest and even most Parksville voters were opposed.
In Area E where I live, the turnout was much greater and over 93 per cent voted no.
I am an active swimmer and believe swimming is a great lifelong activity. I live five minutes from the Fairwinds Wellness Centre. Why should my taxes be increased to pay for a pool I will never use and requires a half-hour drive from my home?
