The city of Williams Lake is hiring a wildfire risk reduction and FireSmart coordinator to help the community be prepared and protected for wildfire season.
The new coordinator will work towards minimizing the risk of disaster by enhancing FireSmart education, policy and regulation as well as by coordinating regional resources. While it recognizes the vital role of fires in a forest’s ecosystem, the city said it prioritizes the safety of the community and seeks to strengthen it by emphasizing FireSmart practices.
An example of reducing the risk of wildfires is prescribing controlled burning to remove excess vegetation and debris which can fuel wildfires. The work shouldn’t be left entirely to professionals though. In fact, action from community members is crucial in building a FireSmart city and can help prevent the worst from happening.
By clearing dead or overgrown vegetation, the residents of Williams Lake can help prevent fires and reduce their risk of spreading. Maintaining a clear property also improves access for first responders.
The city’s new FireSmart coordinator is intended to empower the public by inspiring effective action towards community safety and resilience. Those interested can apply by sending their resume, cover letter and references to Ashley Williston at awilliston@williamslake.ca by Oct. 11.
