The last month has provided us with mixed news: Some good, some bad and some that could probably use a beer to get over. As the industry continues to navigate challenges, it’s so much more important to support local breweries, pubs and restaurants, as well as the festivals and events that are still going ahead.

The biggest item that has come up in the last month or so would have to be the cancellations of the Langford and Great Canadian Beer Festivals for 2025. The announcement is both unexpected and not surprising. Ticket sales have been declining over the past few years, costs have gone up and fewer breweries have been able to afford the cost of travelling across the province and country to attend.

As such, this gives breweries a bit of a break on their marketing and festival budgets, and it allows the folks at the Victoria Beer Society an opportunity to adjust and plan for next year with the hopes of the events returning, including Victoria Beer Week if possible.

So, now that the value of tickets for those events has been freed up from your budget, what should you do with the money burning a hole in your pocket?

Well, the always amazing Thirsty Chef is back again this year. After the break between years six to nine, The Drake Eatery’s anniversary celebration came back last year, and was as delightful as we all remembered, so why not celebrate 11 years as well?

The event takes over the courtyard at Market Square on July 26, with so many amazing breweries and restaurants offering a great selection of beverages and unique dishes to enjoy. Tickets are $50 and include both the food and commemorative glassware and a donation to the Victoria Cool Aid Society.

If that sounds like a fantastic afternoon, you should also be looking at Brewery and the Beast. 17 Black Events’ Festival of Meat is happening again at Starlight Stadium on Sept. 21, with tickets available for $159.95 + GST. The event is all-inclusive, so no tokens, tickets, or extra costs are involved unless you want to add to that collection of merchandise.

While the lack of some festivals may be disappointing, consider this an opportunity to try something new this year and give these industries the boost they both need and deserve.
