A new art exhibition in Vernon will have people reflecting on themes of identity, community and belonging during B.C. Culture Days.
Reflections on Belonging is an exhibition at the Caetani Cultural Centre, presented in collaboration with Vernon and District Immigrant and Community Services Society (VDICSS).
The exhibition makes use of dynamic storytelling, immersive art installations and interactive experiences. It will also feature seven of Sveva Caetani's paintings from her renowned Recapitulation Series, with her work offering insights that reflect her journey and encourage viewers to connect with the emotions and memories that inform her art.
"We’re thrilled to partner with the Caetani Cultural Centre to bring this important exhibition to our community," said Martin Friedrich, executive director of VDICSS. "In today’s complex social landscape, addressing issues of identity and belonging is more important than ever. This exhibition helps us understand our shared experiences and promotes a more inclusive and supportive community."
The exhibition also includes a specialized educational program for grades 8 to 12. The self-guided program, aligned with B.C.'s curriculum and the BC Anti-Racism K-12 Action Plan, offers educators a flexible framework to explore the themes of identity and community with their students.
Laisha Rosnau, executive director of the Caetani Centre, highlighted the importance of engaging with students.
"Connecting with youth through this exhibition is essential. It provides them with the understanding and skills needed to navigate and contribute to our evolving society. These conversations are essential for empowering the next generation to make meaningful contributions to our community," Rosnau said.
Reflections on Belonging will be open to the public on Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. from Sept. 27 to Oct. 12 at the Caetani Centre. For more information or to schedule a school visit, contact csmari.info@vdicss.org.
