A get’er done attitude drove 2023 Williams Lake Stampede Lifetime recipient Bruce Lennox to be a valuable rodeo volunteer for many years.
If he was doing some maintenance at the Stampede grounds, noticed something needed fixing and it was not a big expense he went ahead and did it on his own.
As a director he worked with past presidents Fred Thomas and Tim Rolph and today’s president Court Smith, enjoying their leadership.
For a time he competed in team roping with members of the Sure family and Jasper family from Riske Creek and had a lot of fun.
Originally from North Bay, Ont. Lennox was one of 12 children.
In 1976 he and his wife Barb decided to head west with their three children Colleen, Darryl and Darren.
They sold everything, converted an old school bus into a camper and ended up at Scout Island where there used to be a campground.
He was hired by the late Rudy Johnson and then went to work for Johnson’s son Gary at Cariboo West Contracting. To this day he appreciates the kindness shown to his family by the Johnsons.
From there he worked for Pinette and Therrien Mills and eventually at their ranch in Big Lake.
He became a mechanic for Finning and eventually moved to High River, Alta. Lennox and his wife returned to Williams Lake when they were offered jobs to run the Stampede Campground, which they did for four-and-a-half years. He also went back on the Stampede board of directors.
Lennox was president of the Riske Creek Recreation Association and the Chilcotin Rodeo Association for a few years and a member of the Lions Club.
Last November he and Barb moved to Elkford where their son Darren lives, needing the support. Married for 61 years so far, Lennox said they have a good life and feel lucky to live in Canada.
Praising the Stampede and the community of Williams Lake for giving 150 per cent support, he said the sponsors and volunteers are always so great. He said he misses Williams Lake and hopes to return for this year’s rodeo.
