Staff and students of School District 27, as well as volunteer parents, are preparing to celebrate the graduating class of 2023.
On Friday evening, June 9, things will kick off with the formal convocation at the Cariboo Memorial Recreation Complex CMRC).
This formal ceremony will be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. in Rink 1 of CMRC and will consist of the graduating class entering, a traditional welcome by the Secwépemc First Nation, opening speeches, graduates receiving their diplomas and the class valedictorian address.
Graduates will wear their graduation regalia, cap and gowns.
There are 226 students graduating from Lake City Secondary School this year.
The Cariboo Adventist Academy has nine students graduating this year, while Skyline/GROW also has nine students graduating.
On Saturday, June 10 is the Williams Lake Dry Grad celebrations where all graduating students are welcome to participate.
The Dry Grad Parade route is very similar to pre-pandemic routes. Staging for the parade will happen on Second Ave. near the public works yard at 4:30 p.m. The parade starts at 5:30 p.m.
Businesses and residents along the route may experience some disruption with road closures, which is why a later time was determined by the planning committee.
As in years past, residents can expect to see graduates dressed in formal wear spilling into Boitanio Park for photographs after the parade, and before entering the complex for Dry Grad celebrations where this year’s theme is Las Vegas.
In keeping with that theme, there will be an Elvis impersonator, six cabanas for guests to hang out in, an Eiffel tower and other Vegas-themed decorations, slot machines, blackjack and roulette tables, a gaming truck, boxing with inflatables, bouncy castles, obstacle course, an escape room and of course a DJ and dance.
Celebrations will last until 2 a.m.
Williams Lake Dry Grad is made possible with the support of local businesses and individuals who have donated cash, prizes and volunteer time.
