Victoria looks to highlight people who make the city a better place with its honorary citizen awards.

Issued every four years, the awards celebrate those who provide outstanding service to better the community as well as personal achievements.

“We are fortunate to have dedicated community members who volunteer their time, energy and talents to improving the lives of others,” Mayor Marianne Alto said in a news release. “This award is a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the exceptional contributions made by these Victorians.”

Nominees must be a current or former resident of the region and demonstrate outstanding contributions in one of several categories: arts and culture, business, communication, community/volunteer, education, environment, heritage, indigenous, inspirational youth, multicultural, social or health issues, sports or some other area.

Nominations will be reviewed by a selection committee – made up of past award recipients and co-chaired by Couns. Chris Coleman and Krista Loughton – then recommended for council’s consideration.

“So many of our neighbours are doing remarkable work quietly behind the scenes to improve our city,” Loughton said. “I am excited to be a part of the awards and to showcase the amazing work being done across our communities.”

The Honorary Citizen Award program was established in 1971 as an official recognition of persons who had, over time, served the city meritoriously in any walk of life, often in a volunteer capacity and without recognition.

Nomination packages should include a completed nomination form, statement of nomination, a digital photo of the nominee for publication purposes and two letters of support. Packages can be emailed to mayorandcouncil@victoria.ca, mailed or dropped off to city hall before Monday, June 30 at 11:59 p.m. Find the forms online at victoria.ca/city-government/honorary-citizen-award.

“Since 1971, the Honorary Citizen Award has celebrated community leaders who embody the spirit of service and dedication,” Coleman said. “Recognizing this work honours their incredible commitment while inspiring others.”

Recipients will be acknowledged at a ceremony this fall.
