The first-ever Junk in the Trunk event held at the Tourism Discovery Centre last Saturday was a lot of fun and attracted people selling everything from household items to crafts and clothing.

Visitor counsellor and events co-ordinator Betty Turatus who organized the unique opportunity said vendors were provided a parking space to sell their treasures from their vehicles.

“We decided we could try and utilize our space with more events such as this,” Turatus said.

Victoria Schill came from Likely to participate in the event, she said as she put together a metal shelving unit she was selling.

Grade 5 Cataline Elementary School students Hanna Hutchins and Kalli Elliott, with help from Brad Elliott, Carol Campbell and fellow student Braxton Brown-John seized the opportunity to hold a bake sale to raise funds for the World Wildlife Foundation.

“We are doing this for a Genius Hour project for school,” Hanna said. “We will send the money to WWF to help endangered animals.”

Kalli said they came up with the bake sale rather than “just collecting money or setting up a donation box.”

Here Turatus talks about the Junk in the Trunk.

The cost of renting a spot was $30 to pay for the advertising, Turatus said, noting the TDC plans to host another Junk in the Trunk in the coming months.
