'Tis the season to sharpen the skates and get ready for some ice time, as the Cariboo heads into winter.
The Cariboo Chilcotin Conservation Society (CCCS) is once again opening up their donation bins to take in old skates which have been outgrown or upgraded, so those who may not yet have a set of their own can get out on the ice.
Donation bins have been set up at the Cariboo Memorial Recreation Complex located at 525 Proctor St. in Williams Lake and at Total Ice at 4535 Cattle Dr. to collect used skates no longer needed. The skates are then sharpened up thanks to support by Caribou Source for Sports and offered for free to those who need them.
Anyone in need of skates can come and try some on at the CCCS office in suite 102 of the Phoenix Building, located at 197 Second Avenue North. between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Wednesdays. Call 250-398-7929 to check and make sure the program coordinator will be in the office.
The program helps to keep hundreds of sets of skates out of landfills and helps provide affordable, accessible winter recreation opportunities in the community.
