Middle school students from Columneetza gathered at Scout Island for a unique learning experience - math in the great outdoors. With the sun shining and the birds chirping, students were able to get out of the classroom and apply their math skills in a fun and engaging way.

The program was the result of a collaboration between math teacher Nara Riplinger and Scout Island staff Adrien Zimmerman, Madigan Riplinger and Brianna Condilenios. Adrien is studying Integrated Science at UNBC, while Madigan is studying Biology at UBC. Brianna is working at Scout Island to get community field experience for her teaching degree. They wanted to create a hands-on learning experience that would help students see the practical applications of what they were learning in the classroom. The day was filled with a variety of outdoor math activities, including calculating the age of trees using circumference, and finding height of trees through similar triangles.

By taking learning outside the classroom, the Scout Island staff and Nara hope to inspire a love of math and nature. They hope to help the students see their classroom in a whole new light.

Scout Island is currently accepting registration for their summer programs. They provide various day camps for ages 4-13. These programs start on July 5th, and the Scout Island staff can be contacted through phone at 250-398-8532 or by email at scoutisland@shaw.ca
