About 150 women and children danced and enjoyed each other’s company at a Lohri festival in Williams Lake.
Held at the Gibraltar Room Saturday evening, Jan. 27, the event marked the 10th year such a celebration has been held in Williams Lake and organized by Jaswinder Boyal, Sulinder Randhawa, Ravi Klar, Rani Lehal and Amarjit (Amy) Khakh. Traditional vegetarian food and chai tea were served, and door prizes were given out.
Khakh said over the last decade, including this year, more than $50,000 has been raised through the event and donated to the local hospital, both temples, the Salvation Army and Child Development Centre.
Lohri is a winter Punjabi folk festival celebrated in Northern India held to mark the end of winter and longer days ahead. This year $750 each was donated to the Gurunanak Sikh temple and Western Singh Sabha Gurudwara.
